Hannaford Strengthens Commitment to Nutrition with On-Pack Program

What Is Guiding Stars?

Hannaford’s Guiding Stars program is a program in which Hannaford, along with a panel of expert nutrition scientists, evaluated many of the food items sold in their stores according to which foods provide the most nutrition for the calories. Foods are designated with one, two or three stars according to a system that allows customers to easily identify healthier food options.

In October 2007, Hannaford launched an On-Pack Nutrition Labeling program at the meat case in all 163 of their stores in the northeastern U.S. in an effort to provide their customers with nutrition information.

"Hannaford took the lead in on-pack nutrition labeling, because we are committed to providing our consumers easy-to-use nutrition information that supports our Guiding Stars program," explained Hannaford’s Meat Category Manager Peter Forester.

With the implementation of an On-Pack Nutrition Labeling program, Hannaford has been able to promote the positive health benefits of beef to their customers. Through the use of point-of-sale materials such as posters and ironman signs, they have driven home positive nutrition messages such as:

  • Beef is an excellent source of Protein and Zinc.
  • Beef is a good source of B-vitamins and Iron.
