Sales Data : Data Sources Defined

Where Is All That Data Coming From?

Data… Raw numbers… The cold hard facts… You need this stuff to run your meat department to its full potential…

Where does all that data come from? How can you use it to benchmark your success? The beef industry purchases scan sales data from FreshLook Marketing and featuring data from Promodata to monitor beef sales. You can utilize the summary information as a yardstick of your progress.

FreshLook Marketing, a leading supplier of marketing research information to the perishables industry, provides sales data that they purchase from retailers for all variable measure fresh products. These are actual scan data captured at the point of sale from supermarkets around the country and are the most accurate data available.

Promodata, an expert in the ad tracking business, collects featuring data based on weekly ads from supermarkets operating in all major national markets.

FreshLook Marketing and Promodata each provide the beef industry monthly and quarterly reports. These reports contain information on a Total US basis and for eight regions around the country.

These key measures for all proteins are summarized in each FreshLook report:

  • Sales dollars
  • Pounds activity
  • Average price per pound
  • Share and trend information

Data are also reported on the sales results of each beef category including ground, loin, round, rib, chuck, thin meats and offal.

Monthly Promodata reports contain information on beef, veal, chicken, pork, turkey and “all others” based on  total ad count and share basis. Total and “A” ads (those most prominently displayed or with a large photo included) are also evaluated. Reporting periods include current month, latest 13 and 52 week time periods. Average feature prices for all meat and poultry categories are also included.

When these reports are received, the retail marketing program staff develops a top line of results and makes it available on BeefRetail.org.  You will receive an alert via the Retail Beef Blast that new information is available. View current data.
